"Grain challenges me to make objects in three dimensions," he said of his expertise. "Errors or defects in wood will improve from your design. For me, the knot can be the best part."

He went on to get a master's degree in fine arts from the School of the Chicago Art Institute in 1952, then studied with the sculptor Jose de Creeft in Mexico before returning home to teach art classes at Cherokee High School.

Crowe also passed on his skills to more than 2,000 students for over 40 years and illustrated the 1956 book Cherokee Legends and Trail of Tears. And he died in 2004.

In many countries outside the US, Doodle Friday paid homage to Elisa Leonida Zamfirescu, one of the first female engineer figures in the world, about what would be her 131st birthday.
